Anglers death sparks safety warning - by John P. Kelly and Matt DeAngelo

The death of a 16-year-old girl at a popular Portland park was caused by a misstep on the part of one of two boys in an overnight fight, police and park officials say.

A 13-year-old boy is charged with assault, two other boys also charged in connection to the Saturday fight in Portland's Pioneer Square, said Sgt. Pete Simpson.

At about 2:20 a.m., police say, the juvenile was approached by a man wearing a gray hoodie and black pants. The man, police say, attacked the teen and pushed her to the ground.

The other boy got away, police say.

Later, the teenager said a friend and an adult walked out of her park after the assault. The teen has no apparent injuries.

An hour later, at 4:50 a.m. Friday, the teen was on a park bench when the boy approached her again, police say. This time, the teen was punched in the face.

The girl jumped over a large, metal barrier at a park entrance, police say, and ran away when she felt pain. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center for medical evaluation.

The juvenile, identified as Yavuzi P. Sattar, 17, was booked Saturday morning at the Multnomah County Detention Center on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The boy, identified as Ismail Altaib, 20, of Northeast Portland, faces two counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of possession of a weapon to commit a crime, police said.

Newcastle airport expansion 'well within' raaf base limitat which has been criticised as 'insignificant'

MARK BOWIE/FAIRFAX NZ Newcastle Airport was set to be the next in line for a huge expansion, after Newcastle City council agreed to build a 10.2-hectare "Rafet Base" off the airport.

Council has agreed to develop a 20-hectare site at St Joseph's Park - a massive expansion of the airport - as the next stage in the construction of a "Rafet Base" of land needed for a massive expansion of the Newcastle airport, sources with knowledge of the deal revealed on Tuesday.

The decision is seen as a victory for all of those killed, but the decision is seen by many as one of the biggest losses.
