Nz minister survives deportation scandal

The first major blow came when Israeli courts on Monday released two Iranian men accused of trying to join the terrorist organization Hezbollah, but with convictions in Israeli courts, and the second, Iranian-born cleric, sentenced to eight years in prison, on Friday.

On March 30, Israeli courts overturned their sentences. They ordered them released on humanitarian grounds as they were victims of cruel and inhumane treatment.

But on Thursday, their homes in the village of Duma near Haifa were bulldozed to make way for concrete housing and a fence. The two men's families were not notified of their pending eviction.

The two, Mohammad Fakhrizadeh and Hussein Hamid, have since been detained in Israeli prisons, while their lawyer, Majdi Tamimi, was granted a court hearing on Friday.

Tamimi said he was expecting the charges against the two to be dropped if the appeals court finds they were acquitted. "After my first day in court, when we found out that [The High Court's] ruling came out, it just broke my heart," he said.

The men were both born and raised in Iran. Fakhrizadeh was married to a female Iranian man, while Hamid attended the University of Tehran and was married to a woman from Khuzestan in Khuzestan Province.

The High Court's ruling has outraged the Duma residents.

"This is a blow to my people in Duma," said village elder Mohammed Shouer, who lost both parents to suicide bombings in Iran. "But for this verdict to come here was a nightmare for me and I can't understand how [Israeli authorities] can allow such a ruling to stand.

"The verdict is a slap in the face of my people as well," Shouer added.

The head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Salehi, and Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon released a joint statement Tuesday expressing disappointment at the Israeli Court's ruling.

"We wish the families of [the two] the right to appeal, which we have always maintained is legitimate," Salehi said. "We are deeply grateful to the Israeli government for taking the courageous and important step of allowing the appeal to proceed."

Teacher had 'intense' relationship with student over her age

He has admitted the school is doing 'everything possible' to support the teachers and staff who had worked so hard to bring her to school.

He said: "I'd like to extend my heartfelt apologies for the situation we've created for her and her family.

"She's one of thousands of young children being abused by some of this country's brightest teachers - and she wants no part of what happened today.

"We've all got our responsibilities to protect children and we should not let them down by not doing so.

"I take full responsibility and take full responsibility as to how this has happened, and how we will do everything possible in the coming days to see her best interests in front of us."

A police statement said: "Officers were called to the scene of a fight between two pupils.

"During the course of the incident at the school, there was a fight involving more than one victim. One of the victims had to be taken away from the scene."

It added: "We were called to report there was a minor injury which resulted in a fight with another victim.

"We attended the incident at around 5pm and confirmed there were six children involved.

"We are now making a further inquiry and have spoken to the parents and were able to establish what the appropriate measures will be for this.

"We are continuing to liaise with all relevant authorities.

"A member of staff is currently on a day-long leave with a full assessment as this is ongoing. It is likely that police have issued further warning notices."

The mother of one pupil at the school, who did not want to be named, described the attack as a "wham-bam" in a tweet posted before the report was issued.

She said: "Woke up to hearing a bang in my bedroom. I knew someone must have gone through the house".

The mother, a pupil at Beaumont School in Southport, East Sussex, had been attending a special event with her pupils when she had received a call from a teacher.
